The diaphragm is a dome-shaped sheet of muscle which joins into the lowest few ribs. It basically divides the chest cavity from the abdominal cavity below. When it contracts it pulls itself down towards the bottom of the ribcage, causing the lungs to expand and fill with air. So, while you feel your chest go in and out while you breathe normally, this is not the primary way your lungs fill up – the internal motion of your diaphragm is actually doing most of the work.
When we are in fear, our breathing can become shallow. Over time, due to trauma, we may even begin to hold trapped emotions in the diaphragm. We never quite feel that we take a full breath. Even the fascia around the diaphragm may become tight or we may get adhesions in this area. Use this innovative library as a way to raise your awareness about your diaphragm, about your current breathing state and how to improve your abilty to be in the present moment through conscious breath. Frequencies included in this library (this is a select sample) are:
Ability to relax and experience expiratory pause
